Kingsville's Donny Diaz walked away the winner of the first ever John Paul Barta Home run Derby, and thus a $1,000 scholarship.The contest was held at Flour Bluff High School and was named after the former Hornets' player John Paul Barta, who was killed in action overseas in Iraq in 2006. The Rockport-Fulton Pirates are gearing up for the 2014 season, but first they'll get to compete against the state's best in the 7-on-7 tournament.The Pirates qualified for the tourney down in Weslaco this past weekend. Yeager, who won a Class 5A State Championship in 2010, will be hired as the new baseball coach at Grapevine High School in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The Sinton Pirates were limited to one hit and one run today by Argyle ace Drew Gooch in a 5-1 State Semifinal loss to the Eagles.Argyle scored its first three runs via wild pitch, error, and a double steal, by Sinton simply could not muster any kind of offensive consistency against Gooch, who is heading to TCU this fall on a baseball scholarship.
