72-year-old Ram Chavez suffered a heart attack on Oct. 23 and he is still recovering in the hospital.

"I can't say enough how well they've taken care of me," Chavez said.

Chavez felt his attack coming a few weeks before the incident, but it wasn't until the last night of the Jazz Festival when he knew something went wrong.

"We played the whole time. I even introduced the guys at the end. And my sister noticed my heavy breathing and she called 911. And when I got off stage I sat on a chair and barely made it down. Paramedics came and put me in one of the little carts, and they checked me first in the ambulance and said you got to go in," Chavez said.

Chavez served in the Vietnam as a combat medic where he was wounded doing his job. After Vietnam, Chavez picked up his musical career.

"Because I enjoy that. You know, I enjoy that. It's been great therapy for me since Vietnam. Music has been my therapy," Chavez said.

Chavez wishes to be with the Veterans Band on their busy schedule the next few days.

"They've been doing a great job. They talk to me every day. They've been performing. Tomorrow. They are performing all day today. Tomorrow and Sunday they're going to Laredo, Crystal City and then Monday, then Thursday," Chavez said.

Chavez is determined to get over this hurdle of his life and learned a valuable lesson: there is still a future left for him.
