Technology is changing the way 911 call takers receive emergency calls. The use of cell phones has increased the number of calls Metrocom has received in the last several years.
This last year dispatchers handled 750,000 calls with 250,000 of those being 911 calls. According to Ronnie Sepulveda, Manager of Metrocom, because more people have cell phones they are receiving multiple calls for a single incident that people witness when they are out and about.
Text messages, also might be the future of contacting 911 dispatch. By this summer the federal government has mandated that texting be another option for contacting 911.
