A ceremony was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday to unveil the Peace Officers Memorial Highway signs located at Highway 358 east and Agnes Street.

The portion of Highway 358 from I-37 to Highway 286 is designated as the Peace Officers Memorial Highway, a memorial that began as part of House Bill 3831, which passed in legislative session and was authored by State Representatives Abel Herrero, Todd Hunter and Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa.

The signs are the last step of the memorial, and were paid for by private funds that were raised to manufacture and install them. The signs were unveiled Tuesday morning with city officials present as a way to remember those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

One such officer that was remembered at Tuesday's ceremony was Lt. Stuart Alexander, who was struck and killed in the area of the newly designated highway while using spike strips to stop a suspect involved in a high-speed chase back in March of 2009.

Kiii News Anchor Rudy Trevino attended the ceremony and came back with the details.
