Affidavit details bribery allegations against Nueces County constable

Nueces County Constable Robert Sherwood was accused of bribing a taxi cab driver in Port Aransas.

New information regarding Wednesday's arrest of Nueces County Constable Robert Sherwood came to light Friday as the affidavit for his arrest warrant was obtained by 3News.

Sherwood was arrested late Wednesday night and now faces charges of bribery, engaging in organized crime and tampering with a witness.

According to the affidavit, the incident dates back to May 13, 2016, when taxi driver Loye Dalton Snyder reported to Port Aransas police that he had been assaulted by two men, both passengers in his cab.

A year later in June of 2017, Snyder alleges that Constable Sherwood bribed him to withdraw the charges.

In the affidavit, Snyder stated that he played three recorded conversations to the investigating officer of the Texas Rangers. The first was a phone call between Snyder and the owner of the taxi cab company where Snyder is told that Sherwood wants to speak with him about the incident, and is told that Sherwood wanted to "ease everything" and they "needed to get a price."

In a second recording, the call was between Snyder and Sherwood. The affidavit states that Sherwood asked Snyder to visit his office to discuss the incident.

The third recording was recorded in person, and Sherwood is heard asking, "Where is this going?" and "What do you want to do?" Sherwood is heard asking Snyder, "So here's the deal. What do you want to do to make it go away? I mean, what's it worth to you to make it go away? You want $100? You want $100 tip?"

The affidavit states that Sherwood told Snyder that "the other people in the incident are powerful and may come after him and the taxi company," and twice after that Sherwood asks Snyder "what he wants to do to make it go away."

A few days later, Snyder met with Sherwood and the owner of the taxi cab company and was handed an envelope with $300. Snyder then went to Port Aransas police and declined to press charges.

It was on Tuesday of this week that Texas Rangers interviewed Sherwood, who confirmed that he was given the money by a guy from San Antonio that wanted this to "go away." Sherwood verified that he knows the people from San Antonio because they are a part of an organization that has a big party in Port Aransas every year, and that he worked security for them in the past.

Sherwood claimed that the idea of money, $1,000, for making the case go away was Snyder's idea.

Also on Tuesday, Sherwood called the owner of the taxi cab company and warned him that the Texas Rangers would be by to see him and that he should deny everything and confirm that the idea of a $1,000 was Snyder's idea.

Sherwood was arrested Wednesday night and his bond was set at $115,000. If found guilty on the first-degree felony alone, engaging in organized criminal activity, Sherwood faces 5-99 years in prison, or life.
