A poorly positioned alarm system failed to alert one southside mattress store that a theft was in progress overnight.

The manager of Mattress Zone on SPID, near Kostoryz, arrived to work Tuesday morning to find a single window pane busted out, with the glass littering the walkway and inside of the store. A $1,300 queen-size mattress was the only thing stolen.

Investigators said the burglar missed tripping the security alarm by only inches.

The store has only been open four months, but Store Manager Lonnie Rocha said he plans to reposition the alarms and install burglar bars on the front window.

Officers are reviewing security video to see if they captured an image of the thief.

The owner of Mattress Zone is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. If you have any information, please call Crime Stoppers at 361-888-8477.
