A man who allegedly tried to run over a Corpus Christi police officer during a traffic stop Tuesday at was arrested after a short chase.

According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, an officer made the traffic stop around 1:20 p.m. near the intersection of Cheyenne Street and Baldwin Boulevard. During the traffic stop, police said the driver appeared to be trying to run over the police officer as he fled.

Corpus Christi police pursued the suspect to the area of Highway 286 and Trojan Drive and called off their chase. By this time, the Texas Department of Public Safety said their troopers had joined the chase and continued to follow the suspect.

DPS troopers said the suspect got out of his vehicle in the area of Christie Street and Franklin Drive and jumped some fences in the neighborhood as he fled on foot. He was detained in the 4600 block of Christie Street.

According to the CCPD, the suspect had been under surveillance by the DEA as part of a narcotics investigation. DEA had called for officers to pull the man over, and that's when he fled.

The suspect was turned over to the DEA.
