Some sobering new figures were released by the Corpus Christi Police Department Friday regarding the number of drivers being arrested on DWI charges.

Police said we have already surpassed last year's numbers by 33-percent -- by this time last year, there had been 192 arrest, and this year there have already been 257 arrests. Of all the drunk driving arrests so far this year, 29 were felony cases, meaning the individual arrested had two or more prior convictions.

Eight people were charged with intoxication assault, and five are accused of driving drunk with a child in the vehicle.

Police said most of the DWIs were in the downtown area, with the southside of Corpus Christi coming in a close second.
