Many Coastal Bend residents were left without jobs following Hurricane Harvey, and Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend is trying to remedy that.

The organization is hosting a hiring event Saturday as there are now 50 temporary relief worker positions available.

The hiring event will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Suite 1 of Sunrise Mall.

"When you've been without a job for a while it totally impacts your quality of life, your self-esteem, your self-confidence," said Monika De La Garza of Workforce Solutions.

Garza has seen the devastation in counties affected by Harvey. The organization received a $1.6 million grant to send out mobile units to individuals left without a job.

"It's been amazing, but the biggest thing is we're helping people. We're helping the people that need help," De La Garza said.

Months after Harvey, Coastal Bend residents continue to benefit from Workforce Solutions. Maria Franco-Davila received assistance from the program for years.

"I've been coming here since I got out of high school," Franco-Davila said. "I was a young parent. They sent me to college, paid me to go to school, helped me with daycare, and any time I'm in need of something they're here for me."

Franco-Davila became a mother at the age of 13 and went to Workforce Solutions for help early in life.

"Some people gave up, and I didn't," Franco-Davila said. "I was determined to go forward, and so far I have. I can't say any more good about it because it is good. They do help everybody here in the community. There's a lot of us struggling, but we get help from them."

At the age of 49, Franco-Davila became jobless because of Hurricane Harvey, just as thousands of other Coastal Bend residents.

De La Garza said there are now 50 temporary relief worker positions that need to be filled. She said not only does a new job provide income, but it can also give someone a chance to move on and enjoy the holidays.

"Offering them some hope. Offering them some guidance to the future. It's going to get better, and we hope, and we hope we can help in that process," De La Garza said.
