A local Texas landmark and skating hotspot was ranked the most improved skating rink of 2017.
Corpus christi's very own Sk8land was honored by Roller Skating Magazine.
"It's the employees the music," Abram Reyes said. "They're always smiling every time you go in the greet you."
"This place is if you want to have fun on wheels, this is where you go," 10-year-old speed skater Jacob Carbajal said.
For 44 years, one coastal bend skating rink has been a place where people can roll away their worries.
"It's great," veteran skater George Rubio said. "I like it I just like to listen to dance to listen to music,"
And now it's among the elite in the country according to Roller Skating Magazine.
"It's about time," Rubio said "It really is about time that they get the recognition. A lot of people don't understand and don't realize that."
"We have families here that grow up together skating and we've seen it for," owner Michael Ruiz said. "I've been doing this since 1984 as an employee as a kid and families that come together you see them grow up and get old."
Ruiz was one of those kids.
"As i got older my dream was to won a skating rink preferably this one when I was a teen," Ruiz said.
Ruiz worked on and off at the rink into the 1990's and started managing the next decade.
His dream officially came true when he bought it in 2014 and completely re-vamped the place.
"We re-did the floor which is a maple wood skate floor which is laid back in 1974 so it's a real floor and they're hard to take care of," Ruiz said. "Changing the color in here, new lighting, LED lighting, smoke machines and flat screens."
Adding state of the art music and a one of a kind sign was the cherry on top to what he wanted to be an overall experience for customers.
"You could get exercise and they do games that you could do exercise and have fun at the same time," 9-year-old Joshua Carbajal said.
Ruiz credits families including his own for making the rink what it is today.
"That was my main thing this time around family," Ruiz said. Family will support you for years cuz they keep coming generations."
The Ruiz family hopes to expand Sk8land and open up several other locations within the next few years.
