Aunt and nephew compete in Texas SandFest

This sculptor said his aunt is the best mentor he could ask for.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) — The Texas SandFest brought together some of the best sand sculptors in the world.

Every year, the sculptors in each branch compete to have the most creative and impressive sculpture made of sand.

Many of them said although it's a hard medium to work with, it's also their favorite.

"It's the quickest way to create something 3D, you know, it's sand is everywhere so it can be done anywhere and it's such a great way to improve your 3D sculpting skills because you can smash it down and start over again," said Lucinda Wierenga, a sculptor from South Padre Island.

Lucinda said she's been sculpting since the 80's; she boasts an impressive portfolio with pieces for businesses and competitions.

She's even traveled to Tasmania to sculpt sand.

"I've written three books on this subject I've traveled all over the world doing this," she said.

Eventually, she began to share her passion with her nephew, Emerson Scheiner.

"I kinda grew up learning some things from her and a few years ago she invited me to come work with her and been doing stuff like this ever since," he said.

Together, the duo has traveled to various competitions and Wierenga has mentored her nephew. She claimed, the Texas SandFest is her favorite contest.

"This is one of my favorite events, they treat us so well here, and the weather is like perfect and people are having fun and I love it here," Wierenga said.

This year, the duo built what they called a 'Strange Garden.' Like the other sculptors, they began building on Thursday and their work will be judged on Sunday.
