Thousands of Corpus Christi residents and businesses were left in the dark after a transformer blew out around 1:30 p.m. Monday at American Electric Power Texas' Holly substation.

At its peak as of around 3 p.m., more than 14,000 customers were left in the dark. Signal lights along Weber from SPID to Saratoga Boulevard were knocked out, as well as many down Everhart Road.

AEP Texas said crews were dispatched to work on the problem and expected it to take a couple of hours to repair.

Elliott Grant Middle School, Tom Browne Middle School and Mary Carroll High School were both left without power. Parents were told to pick up their kids if desired. Otherwise, school dismissal and bus routes were to run as they do normally.
