Preparations were underway Tuesday night at the Coastal Bend Food Bank to prepare for the important visit by First Lady Melanie Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence on Wednesday.
Executive Director Bea Hanson said she first learned about the visit just days ago and is excited to show Melania Trump and Karen Pence behind the scenes operations at the Food Bank.
The Coastal Bend Food Bank played a vital role in the days and weeks that followed Hurricane Harvey by distributing food to families in need.
"The very first two weeks after the hurricane, the food bank distributed 1 million pounds of food to five counties," Hanson said.
The staff and volunteers responded to meet the needs of those affected by Harvey even though they too had also suffered severe damage.
"It was amazing to see the hard-working employees of the Food Bank the next morning," Hanson said.
Hanson believes the visit by Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Pence will shine a spotlight on the importance of the local nonprofit organizations.
"And also to the world the work and the heart of the Texas people that helped us recoup and bounce back," Hanson said.
The organization relies on individuals donation to feed the hungry year-round; especially during the holidays.
'We are very proud of the opportunity to show off," Hanson said.
First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will also meet with families affected by Harvey and the first responders who are part of the recovery effort.
