The State of Texas has just released new unemployment numbers for the month of October. The news is great for the state, but in the Coastal Bend, a little less so.
For the first time ever, Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend has more than 5,000 jobs available.
One woman who was looking for a job at Workforce Solutions said there are a lot of jobs available, but it doesn't really make her too optimistic.
"No. Not with the holidays around the corner," Diana Medina said.
Workforce Solutions said as of Monday there were 5,001 job openings -- more than any of the last three years -- and an unemployment rate of 3.9 that's lower than October of last year.
Monika De La Garza of Workforce Solutions said they think there will be even more jobs available in the next few weeks.
"In addition to that, we have the relief workers we're looking to hire, and on top of that we have the holiday season hiring that's taking place, so we're starting to see it spike," De La Garza said.
The latest statewide numbers show the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded in Texas at 3.9%. The Texas Workforce Commission said that means 90 consecutive months of annual growth in the state.
Here in the Coastal Bend, however, the unemployment rate was 5.2% in October, which is 1.4% lower than last year.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbot said that shows the State has policies that allow businesses to thrive and keep Texas the best state in the nation to do business.
