As holiday celebrations begin in the Coastal Bend, the Corpus Christi Police Department is starting their No Refusal Weekend on Friday.

The initiative aims to get drunk drivers off the street and speed up the arrest process so officers can get back on patrol quicker.

"Now even if the suspected driver refuses a blood or breath test, No Refusal means officers will be able to apply for a search warrant and that individual will have no choice but to have their blood tested by a phlebotomist at the City Detention Center," CCPD Lt. Chris Hooper said.

During No Refusal Weekend, the District Attorney's office will provide the resources to expedite the process, and a magistrate will be available to approve or deny immediate search warrants in a DWI case.

"What this No Refusal Weekend does is creates efficiency in the process where the officer can work his way through the DWI procedure in a much more timely manner," Hooper said.

The efficiency will allow officers to return to their patrol quicker and keep the City of Corpus Christi safe.

"That's our focus. That's our mission, and this is just part of the process to provide for a safe holiday," Hooper said.

To avoid ending up at the City Detention Center instead of being home for the holidays, Apollo Towing Services is offering free towing to get people home safe.

"Take the free ride. Have a plan. Work the plan. Know what your limits are and don't cross those limits," said Michael Staff, Vice President of Apollo Towing.

Apollo Towing will be serving residents in Corpus Christi, Portland, and Robstown.

"It's life-changing, not only for those involved and those left to deal with those life-changing events, but also first responders," said a member of the Apollo Towing staff.

Getting a ride is as easy as calling Apollo Towing, a taxi, or downloading the Lyft or Uber app. Officers said with all the safe transportation options around the city, there is no excuse for being on the road while drunk.
