A grieving family feels disrespected after a thief took something from their loved one's grave at Mission Burial Park, on 1700 southeast Military Drive. They said they're not alone, and that it is happening to other families.
Yolanda Herrera-Montoya's sister, Clara Pastrano, died on January 1, 2015.
"I miss my sister very much," she said.
Every birthday and holiday, the family visits the grave to decorate it. The week before Thanksgiving, Yolanda made a cross and placed it right next to her sister's grave. She said when she came back two days later, it was gone.
"Somebody stole it, and left her with nothing," she said. "It broke my heart."
She said other families told her it has happened to them.
"You think you aren't going to be caught, but you are going to be caught," the sister said. "I guarantee you."
In the meantime, the family has put up a Spurs Coyote arrangement next to the grave with a special note: "Don't steal me, please. I belong to Clara Pastrono. God Bless You."
The family is fighting back. They've gone to the cemetery, who is looking into the matter. Yolanda said she recently saw a woman lurking around the area, and said their time will come.
"We love and miss her very much," Herrera-Montoya said. "May she rest in peace. And she knows who took it, and she's going to get you."
