Five victims in deadly crash outside of Sinton identified

Authorities have identified the five victims in a fiery crash that happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday just north of Sinton.

Authorities have identified the five victims in a fiery crash that happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday just north of Sinton.

The group was part of a caravan of six similar vehicles traveling from Georgia to Mexico for the holidays. Department of Public Safety troopers said an SUV in that caravan was traveling on Highway 77 when they veered off the road while on the overpass over Business 77, crashing to the street below and bursting into flames.

Five people were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. They have been identified as 49-year-old Trinidad Guerrero-Cardenas, 50-year-old Jorge Nunez, 16-year-old Clara Arroyo, 64-year-old Victoria Castillo, and 67-year-old Paula Avila-Lopez.

Four other passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment and then released.

3News spoke exclusively to passengers of the vehicle traveling with the caravan just ahead of the victims. They said the group had been planning the trip for some time in hopes of spending the holidays with family in Mexico.
