Local Meals on Wheels program facing decrease in funding

The Meals on Wheels program is hosting a fundraiser from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Senior Center on Greenwood. Hamburgers and chili will be served for $6 a plate.

The local Meals on Wheels program serves up hot food to hundreds of senior citizens in the area who might otherwise go without, but in 2018, a decrease in the amount of money the program receives from the government has officials asking for the public's help.

A good hot meal from Meals on Wheels is sometimes the only one senior citizens will receive in a day. Bobby Salinas has been a cook with the City of Corpus Christi for the last 20 years and knows just how vital the program is to the community.

"When I first started, my dad was one of the recipients, so when they say you are cooking for family, that's how I had it in my heart," Salinas said.

"Meals on Wheels provides more than just a meal," said Lisa Oliver, Superintendent of the City's Parks & Recreation Department.

The program's drivers are sometimes the only contact a person who receives the food will get in a day, making them an essential part of their well being.

"So they are also the first one to notice if the person needs assistance, more than just a meal. Ensuring the welfare of the individual as well," Oliver said.

This year the program, which receives federal and state funding, has seen a decrease in funding. That is creating a local challenge.

"The impact means a $28,000 decrease to the Meals on Wheels program," Oliver said.

There is such a great need for what the program provides that there is a list of individuals, 125 elderly residents, who are waiting for assistance.

"As funds become even more limited, obviously that list continues to grow, so that efforts through fundraising and applying through other resources through grants, we're hoping to maintain the program and continue serving," Oliver said.
