75-year-old Leslie Nelson, who was found guilty Wednesday of murdering his 94-year-old mother, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
A Nueces County jury took just five minutes Wednesday afternoon to find Nelson guilty of murdering 94-year-old Vivian Nelson.
Prosecutors said Nelson took his mother out of her nursing home in August of last year. He took her home and served her a cup of coffee before shooting her in the back of the head.
Defense attorneys said Nelson was tired of seeing his mother in pain.
"Quite frankly this is a very simple case with very complicated emotions. It's a very straightforward case with heavy implications," prosecutor James Kingman said during opening statements. "The murder of one's own mother."
"When her husband died you'll hear she was moved down here," defense attorney Simon Purnell said. "She could no longer live alone."
Punishment phase of the trial was held Thursday, and Nelson was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
