The new FEMA disaster recovery center that opened Tuesday in the parking lot of La Palmera Mall is coming down, but FEMA wants Corpus Christi residents to know they aren't leaving.

Heavy rains and high winds Wednesday morning destroyed the canopies FEMA had set up at the center. Organizers said they were already having to deal with high heat and humidity, along with recent rains, so they are bringing in a larger, more stable tent with air conditioning.

They have also added more Skid-O-Cans in the area.

For now the center is closed, but FEMA expects the new center to be up and running again by Friday morning.

The center will operate from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.on-5 p.m. Sunday.
