Ray High School students take part in National School Walkout

Ray High School was one of three CCISD schools listed on the National School Walkout website as participating in the event.

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) — Students at Ray High School walked off campus for about 17 minutes Friday as part of #NationalSchoolWalkout, a student-led event to remember all victims of school shootings and to call for change in U.S. gun laws.

The National School Walkout was founded by four high school students in Connecticut and takes place on April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

Ray High School was one of three CCISD schools listed on the National School Walkout website as participating in the event.

According to the Corpus Christi Independent School District, their high schools allowed students to participate on their own accord, gathering in designated areas for a short time. However, the walkouts are not school sponsored.

CCISD released the following statement Thursday regarding the National School Walkout event:

"Friday classes will follow their usual schedule. High school campuses will allow students (who choose to do so of their own accord) to gather in designated areas for a short time. As always, there will be adult supervision on all areas of campus. As any activities would be student-led initiatives, we would refer you to student organizers for details. As on any school day, students who leave campus will be marked absent." - Leanne Libby Winkler Director, Office of Communications, CCISD.
