The American Red Cross has been called in to help a family whose home was destroyed by an early morning fire. That blaze happened Thursday just after 1 a.m. at a home on John Street, near Winnebago.

Fire fighters with the Corpus Christi fire department arrived to find the home fully engulfed. Investigators believe the blaze began in the garage of the home before spreading to the rest of the house.

Family members inside at the time of the fire were able to evacuate as fire fighters arrived on scene to battle the blaze. Those family members will be receiving assistance from the Red Cross for temporary shelter as they search for a new place to live.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. This is a developing story. Stay with 3News for the latest.
