The Department of Commerce has announced that federal Red Snapper season has been extended until Labor Day.

With the new policy, you can now catch red snapper on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day. July 3 and 4 will also be red snapper days.

Prior to this change, the 2017 red snapper season was three days from June 1-4. However, complaints prompted federal and state authorities to extend the season.

Dr. Greg Stunz with the Harte Research Institute was part of the decision making process.

"Our population is robust enough to handle the recreational anglers in particular," Stunz said. "But all those involved in fisheries have made some huge sacrifices to get that fishery where it is today, and they need some relief in the form of access to that fishery, and that's what this emergency action does."
