Police Chief of Alice Rex Ramon confirmed Wednesday night that he along with one of his officers and the Texas Rangers are in Alabama serving an arrest warrant for the capital murder of 1974 Alice Police Officer Matt Murphy.

An affidavit filed in late October shows investigators have identified Roberto Lopez as the shooter. Lopez who is now 70 years old is serving a life sentence in an Alabama correctional facility for an unknown charge.

The affidavit goes on to describe Lopez bragging about fatally shooting Murphy using a .22 caliber pistol.

Murphy was listed as an undercover narcotics agent and was put on patrol at the time the shooting took place.

He was shot several times near the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and West Main Street in December of 1974. Murphy later died from his injuries at a nearby hospital.
