One Corpus Christi couple not only celebrated the new year Monday morning, but they also welcomed their first baby.

Baby Elena was born at 3:41 a.m. Monday at Bay Area Hospital -- the first Coastal Bend baby of the new year. She weighed six-pounds 13-ounces.

"She wasn't due for another two weeks," mother Marissa Cruz said. "It was unexpected."

Baby Elena was born to Marissa Cruz and Rolando Ramirez, who admitted the thought of the possibility of having a new years baby did cross their minds.

"Everybody kept saying it and it happened," Cruz said.

"Well we were just going to go eat. She needed to use the restroom, she said, so she went to go check," father Rolando Martinez said.

Upon doing so, it became apparent to the soon-to-be-parents that Elena could be on the way, but they didn't go to the hospital right away.

"We ate. We just kept going. She wanted to go home. I wanted to take her to my cousin's because it was New Year's Eve," Martinez said. "So I dropped her off and I dropped them off and on my way back she calls me and she tells me we need to go to the hospital."

That was around 6 p.m. Sunday, and so began the roughly nine hours of labor, which Cruz said was pretty easy.

"I was just right there. The nurse kept saying I was just hanging out, waiting," Martinez said. "I couldn't really do nothing. She just kept telling me to be quiet, and I was just waiting for her."

At 3:41 a.m., Jan. 1, 2018, little Elena came into the world in Corpus Christi, Texas.
