Two near-drowning incidents cause scare on Padre Island

A 14-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man were brought to the hospital within just minutes after they received CPR on the beach.

UPDATE: 14-year-old, 20-year-old beach drowning victims identified

Two individuals were rushed to Bay Area Hospital Friday evening after being caught in a riptide on Padre Island.

A 14-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man were brought to the hospital within just minutes after they received CPR on the beach.

"I see a man dragging a body, see an arm hanging out," witness Ron Perez said.

After a lot of commotion near Bob Hall Pier, a 20-year-old man was brought onto the shore.

"His body looked lifeless, it was hard to see," Perez said.

According to witnesses, the man looked to be tied up to a fishing pole and line.

"Wrapped around his leg and left arm, wrapped real tight, looked like he couldn't even maneuver," Perez said.

Justin Sacks a physician from Tyler, Tx happened to pull up to the scene with his family just moments after.

"Really didn't have a whole lot of chance to talk just rushed right into it," Sacks said.

Acting quickly Sacks and others were able to clear water out.

"Saw they were doing chest compressions, I decided to try and help with airway and prop head a little bit to help with airway," Sacks said. "He had a lot of fluid, half a liter at most."

Sacks got a faint pulse from the man.

Right down the beach at Packery Channel another incident was reported just minutes before the man.

According to the Corpus Christi Fire Department, a 14-year-old girl was reported to be in the water for about 10 minutes. Lifeguards were finally able to spot the girl and dragged her out before crews arrived and performed CPR on her.

"Saw them working on some young person in back of ambulance doing chest compressions," Sacks said.

Both victims were rushed to Bay Area Hospital with just minutes apart.

"I've gone fishing with waves like this, and it's hard," Sacks said.

If you're caught in a rip current, experts said don't fight it, instead swim parallel to the shore and swim back to land at an angle.

"Really got to understand the dangers and look into it," Perez said.

Both the incidents were a real eye opener for witnesses.

"Hold them precious those kids are important," Sacks said.

"Keep an eye out for them, and everyone around me makes really think about life how precious it can be," Perez said.

Both incidents are still being investigated, and currently, the Corpus Christi Fire Department does not know if the boy either fell off or was pushed off Bob Hall Pier.
