It's official -- the Women's Shelter of South Texas is now called The Purple Door.

The name change was set in stone during a ribbon cutting ceremony at their location Wednesday morning. Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb was there to thank the organization for the work they do in our community.

"They've done a great job, and they do a great job, and I hope their goal is that they work themselves out of a job," McComb said.

They hope the new name will get more victims of abuse to come forward and seek their help. The shelter will also be a safe haven for men that have found themselves in abusive relationships as well.

"We just hope our community comes to its senses in the years ahead to realize there's a better way to get along," McComb said.

The Women's Shelter recently celebrated 40 years of making a difference in the Coastal Bend. During their celebration, they announced the name change. The Purple Door will continue to serve an area of 12 counties.
