In a move that caught his bosses and players by surprise, Moody baseball coach Cornelius "Corky" Gallegos announced his intention to resign from his position Thursday morning.

Gallegos is a former Moody player who won two state baseball championships in 11 years as Trojan coach. He was suspended earlier this spring after being arrested for a DWI on March 30.

He was reinstated three weeks later, and coached Moody in the Class 4A playoffs. He leaves Moody with a 343-64 win-loss record.

Corpus Christi Independent School District officials confirmed that the decision to resign was Corky's alone, and that he was expected to return as coach this fall.
