Some changes that the Nueces County Courthouse are not being met with enthusiasm. Starting Dec. 2, the Motor Vehicle line will close at 4 p.m.
However, they will be open at 8 a.m., earlier than they used to be open. All windows will be open and staffed to try and cut down on the long waits to get car tags.
"If they're going to close it off an hour earlier, that means everyone is going to have to get up here an hour earlier," resident Kevin Ebers said. "A lot of people can't do that because they can't take off that time."
"Probably a bad idea, considering a lot of people get off at 5 p.m., you know, and they probably can't even make it when they close at 5 p.m.," Jonathan Martinez said. "So shortening it an hour probably makes it even worse."
"I don't know what I can do except when time comes to vote, we'll get somebody in who will get enough hours out here," Albert Rivera said.
County Tax Assessor-Collector Kevin Kieschnick said the oil boom is producing more requests for vehicle tags. Closing the windows at 4 p.m. will allow his staff to devote a full hours time to concentrating on all the other clerical work that needs to be done.
