Did you know that in Nueces County, the most expensive single operation is the county jail? It has a budget of about $19 million.

That's just one of the things that members of the Sheriff's Citizen's Academy will be learning. It's a lot like the one for the police department, but this one will give ordinary citizens a chance to see what it's really like to be a deputy.

Up until a couple of years ago, the Citizen's Academy was a twice a year event, but according to Nueces County Sheriff Jim Kaelin, reorganization and changes among departments caused the program to be placed on a short hiatus; but now that everything is in place, it's time to start taking applications once again.

Kiii News Reporter Rudy Trevino looked into it and found that some sports are still open if you would like to be a member of the next Academy.

To apply, pick up an application at the Nueces County Sheriff's Office, located at 901 Leopard Street. Deadline to apply is May 31, and classes begin June 5.
