The City-County Health Department says there has been an increase in the number of cases of shigellosis, an infectious disease that causes diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

Children under two years of age can often have seizures connected with the disease.

Doctors say there is an antibiotic treatment for shigellosis, and that the disease is not considered life threatening. However, children are particularly susceptible, so frequent hand washing is a good way to guard against it.
