Celebrations were held Monday in honor of Mexico's National Independence Day, known as Diez y Seis.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi held a big celebration at the University Center on campus. The event was supposed to be held outside, but the rain forced the party indoors. It marked the unofficial kick-off of Hispanic Heritage Month on campus.
The YWCA also celebrated Hispanic culture with an event focused on the legacy and impact of Dr. Hector P. Garcia.
"It is just wonderful," said Cecilia Garcia Akers, the daughter of Hector P. Garcia. "Not only is it a wonderful event for the city, but it gives us an opportunity to talk about my father's legacy and all of his accomplishments, and the new Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation that we just established last year."
Hispanic Heritage Month runs until Oct. 15.
