A local ministry in Corpus Christi is helping families fight diabetes.

Timon's Ministries is using the help of grants to teach low-income patients the importance of diabetes treatment and prevention. One way they are helping battle the disease is a healthy diet.

"What our goal is, as far as the dining room is concerned, is to provide lots more fruits and vegetables," said Kae Berry, executive director of Timon's Ministries. "Lots of salads, whole-grain rice, whole-grain pasta, foods that maybe would change the taste buds of folks that come to eat here."

The ministry also offers informational classes on how to live with diabetes. They said as much as 30-percent of their patients have the disease, and many don't know before they arrive.
