Hundreds of special Olympians will take to the track and field Saturday for the 31st annual Special Olympics Texas Spring Games.

Volunteers were busy Friday getting ready for the even, which will be held at the Corpus Christi Independent School District's Cabaniss Sports Complex. The event is usually held at the Flour Bluff Independent School District, but due to construction, it has been moved for this year only.

About 400-500 volunteers will be helping throughout the event, but they could always use more.

"This is their day to shine," Competition Director Scott Rasmusson said. "They have been training. They train six-eight weeks before the event. This is the Olympics to them. There are awards given out and this is everything to them. Come on out and see, and you'll see the smiles on their face."

Opening ceremonies for the Spring Games will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, and competition will begin at 10 a.m. Awards will be given out at 3 p.m.
