Eight professional and distinguished women were honored for their achievements by the YWCA on Thursday.

The area women, who are out in the workforce and leading by example, were honored at the YWCA on Corona Drive. Folks who run the YWCA said that recognizing the ladies who have given so much to our community creates positive role models for young girls.

"I think this is so important, just to show women -- young women, women in high school -- that there's a goal they can reach and it's easy, and there are people to support them reach that goal," said Dr. Alma Garcia of the Alice Independent School District.

Since 1979, the YWCA has recognized over 245 women here in our community.
