Texas A&M-CC Men's basketball not able to win on homecoming

Another big night from Joe Kilgore wasn't quite enough to lift Texas A&M-Corpus Christi past New Orleans this Homecoming Night, as the Blue and Green fell to the Privateers by a score of 62-53 at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club Court inside American Bank Center.

Holding New Orleans scoreless through the first two-plus minutes of competition, the Islanders jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the start of the first, in a half that would have four lead changes. Pulling their way back to 15-even, the Privateers' stroke would find itself in the last eight minutes before half time, hitting a pair of threes and scoring on five straight possessions to close out the first.

Kilgore would score 11 points in the first 20 minutes, as the Islander defense recorded three blocks in the opening period. Despite the Blue and Green holding them to just 37% shooting in the first half, the Privateers main advantage came from their longer bench, as they outscored the Corpus Christi subs 13-0.

With a 29-22 deficit, the Islanders would have some ground to make up coming out of the break, but a pair of UNO treys would put the Privateers up by 11 in the opening two minutes. Some clutch play from Kilgore over the next 10 minutes would move the Blue and Green to within four, as the senior would score eight points with three assists during that time frame.

New Orleans would outlast the Islanders for the remainder of the game however, knocking down four of their last five shots of the night to finish off a 62-53 victory.

With another 11 points in the second half, Kilgore would finish his night with 22 points and four assists, followed by Kareem South and Deion Rhea at eight apiece.

  • Kilgore's 22 marks the 10th time he's broken the 20-point barrier this season
  • All nine players that saw time for Corpus Christi on Saturday pulled down a board, as the Islanders outrebounded the Privateers 34-28
  • With seven offensive rebounds the Blue and Green's second chance points beat out UNO 13-6
  • In addition to hitting six of 15 from the field, Kilgore was a perfect eight for eight from the charity stripe
  • Freshman Myles Smith's six rebounds ties a career-high, as the first-year Islander finished with seven points as well
