Boy Scouts of America to Host over 3,500 Area Students at Camp Karankawa
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (April 29, 2008)
The South Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America, Learning for Life Character Education Program Division will be hosting area students for Field Day outings known as “Character Camp” at Camp Karankawa located on Lake Corpus Christi, near Mathis, TX , Mondays through Fridays, May 2-May 23, 2008.
These dates are the last ten field dates of 16 that have been scheduled at the camp for CCISD, Kingsville ISD, and Sarita County Wide School District schools that have utilized the Learning for Life Character Education Program at their schools during the past school year. The students attending the field day outings will be provided the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities such as; a nature trail hike through the woods, a modified baseball game, experience the Bouldering Wall at the newly designed C.O.P.E. Course and learn a new skill at the archery range.
The Learning for Life program is designed to support schools in their efforts to prepare youth to (male & female) successfully handle the complexities of contemporary society and to enhance their self-confidence, motivation and self-esteem by instilling the core values and skills learned by participating in the curriculum of the Learning for Life Character Education Program.
The elementary program is designed for kindergarten through sixth grade. The curriculum for each grade level consists of 60 lesson plans designed to reinforce social, ethical, and academic skills in such areas as critical and creative thinking, ethical decision making, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, practical living skills, building self-esteem, writing and other language arts, and participating citizenship.
The South Texas Council, Boy Scouts of America services 17 counties from Ganado, TX to Laredo, TX. Youth served in this geographic area total over 13,000 in traditional Scouting packs, troops, crews, posts and Learning for Life groups (a school based program currently at the elementary level).
