Be Safe from Diabetes: Beneficial But Rare Gene Mutation

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, and there may be new hope in the fight against the disease.

According to the New York Times, a new study of 150,000 people has found an extremely rare mutation that could protect against the disease. The effect is pronounced -- it reduces the risk by two-thirds -- and may even lower the risk in overweight people.

Two companies that sponsored the study are working on a drug to mimic the gene mutation, but it could take 10-20 years to reach the market. The authors admit more research is needed to understand how the mutation lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes.
