Be Safe from Diabetes: Diabetes and Dogs

Did you know obese dogs can suffer from diabetes just as humans can? In fact, animal experts say overweight dogs face the same health problems as humans do.

According to the ASPCA, diabetes in dogs is caused by either a lack of insulin or an inadequate response to insulin, just like us. There are several symptoms, including change in appetite, excessive thirst, increased urination and unusually sweet-smelling or fruity breath.

It is thought that obese dogs and female dogs may run a greater risk of developing diabetes later in life. However, diabetes is considered a manageable disorder. You may have to give your dog insulin shots, but they can lead happy, healthy lives.

Just ask your dog's veterinarian for more information.
