Be Safe from Diabetes: Stay Healthy While Celebrating the New Year

Want to enjoy that New Years party -- the food and the drinks, and still stay healthy? Planning ahead is important, especially if you have diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association has compiled seven tips to get you through the new year in a healthy way.

1. Focus on friends and family instead of food.
2. Remember, it's a party, but do not overdo it. Instead of trying everything, just enjoy the foods that you may only have once a year.
3. Eat before you eat. Load up on the good stuff at home, and just nibble on the bad stuff.
4. Bring what you like. Don't spend time worrying about what will be served and instead, bring your favorite diabetes-friendly dish.
5. When it comes to drinking, do so in moderation, and if you do drink, be sure to eat something beforehand to prevent low blood glucose levels later.
6. Stay active. Use your holiday time off from work or school to get in some physical activity.
7. If you do overindulge, get back on track ASAP.
