Be Safe from Diabetes: TAMUCC Hosts Exercise Symposium

Kinesiology students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi joined forces Thursday to educate the public on the impact of regular exercise on illness.

It was Exercise as Medicine Symposium, where information was made available on how exercise can fight cardiovascular disease as well as medical conditions such as hypertension and anxiety. A chief concern in our community, diabetes, was addressed as well.

"I know it's a big part here in our community, and I'm a Type 2 diabetic myself," TAMUCC student Abby Quinonez said. "So it really hits my heart, and it's a very big issue that affects us in South Texas."

According to the Texas Department of Health, approximately 15-percent of Nueces County is affected by diabetes, and at least 13-percent of Hispanics are afflicted with the disease.
