Beloved choir director dies minutes after students sing on doorstep

A beloved choir director couldn't have asked for a sweeter sendoff as her battle with cancer came to an end.

ALVIN, Texas - A beloved choir director couldn’t have asked for a sweeter sendoff as her battle with cancer came to an end.

Mariana Walker was Alvin Junior High School’s longtime choir director. She left school and went home for hospice care as her illness progressed.

“She would take the shirt off her back for you at any time,” said Denim Fields, one of Walker’s students.

“She was a very special teacher to us,” said Holly Darnell.

Students who wanted her to know just how much they cherished her, delivered their heartfelt message just in time.

They gathered at her home to sing Hillsong’s Oceans.

“They had this beautiful song to sing for her,” said Laura Sammons, Walker's best friend who was there at the time.  “We opened the doors and just let the sound float in there."

Walker died minutes later but her students vowed to always remember her.

"She was the person I could go to if I was having a bad day,” said Lauren Collins. “She'd let me sit with her and we would be able to just sit there and talk."

Videos capturing the students’ tribute were posted online. Some of them have been shared thousands of times over.

"We wanted our last words for her to be special,” said Darnell.

A memorial scholarship has been established in Walker’s name. Donations can be made here.
