Q –   FTC cracks down on home foreclosure rescue companies using deceptive tactics.

The Federal Trade Commission has announced a crackdown on fraud and deception by mortgage modification and home foreclosure rescue companies. The FTC is encouraging consumers to seek out free, HUD-approved housing counselors for help with their mortgages. The FTC announced eleven law enforcement actions against companies for using deceptive tactics, including firms that marketed their “services” by giving the false impression they were affiliated with the federal government. The FTC also announced that it has sent warning letters to 71 other companies who may be deceptively marketing mortgage loan modification or foreclosure rescue services. As always, check things out before signing on the dotted line. For full information go to:

Q- Job scams are on the rise. Here is a new one.

You put your resume online via Monster.com, careerbuilder.com, etc. A company in a far-a-way city, let’s say Seattle, calls and conducts a telephone interview. They are really impressed with you. They want you to come to Seattle for a face to face interview. Things look very promising. But wait, they will not pay for your travel or lodging. But they will let you use their corporate travel department which means you will save money. Really nice of them. But guess what? After you purchase the airline tickets and room reservations from their travel department, the company disappears. It was all a big scam. Very clever. Always investigate as much as possible any job offer or interview.
