Main Topic: Wal-Mart is recalling about 1.5 million Durabrand DVD players
The recall is because of a potential for the device to burst into flames, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wal-Mart received 12 complaints of the DVD players overheating; in five of the cases, the overheating caused a fire that damaged property, according to a statement from the CPSC. No injuries have been reported. The DVD player, imported from China, was sold at Wal-Mart stores from January 2006 through July 2009 for $29. The DVD player came with a remote control and is silver with a U-shaped opening at the top to insert the DVD. Consumers should stop using the DVD player immediately and return it to Wal-Mart for a full refund.
Remember for all recalls go to:
And a note: Having trouble finding the phone number to your BBB? We have had lots of complaints from folks that cannot find the phone number in the AT&T Yellowpage directory. We are in there but it is in the wrong place. Look under “BBB” alphabetically between Bazans Photography and BBB Tank Service. We also are not listed in the yellowpages.
Scheme of the week: “Check Washing” is an old scam that has returned with a vengeance.
This old scam again has become popular with schemers. It is a low tech scheme that is often hard to detect. The schemer obtains a real check from the victim that is already filled out. Maybe a payment to the electric company, etc. The schemer then uses certain chemicals to “wash” the check taking off the “payee” and “amount” sections. That leaves the victims signature. The con-artist then fills in a new “amount” and another “payee” and then cashes the check.
To protect yourself:
· Use a Uniroll 207 Gel pen to write your checks. Supposedly this will make it impossible for the schemer to erase parts of the check.
· Never send checks by putting them in your mail box with the raised little red flag. That flag says to schemers that, “Hey, something is in here”.
