Driscoll Doctors: So Far, So Good

Two Portland brothers are recovering tonight in two separate hospitals. The young men were the main participants in this area's first ever kidney transplant operation. During an afternoon press conference, Dr. William Allen, the Medical Director of Driscoll's Kidney Center said, "This is a cool thing. Congratulations, Corpus Christi."

19 year old Michael Garcia reportedly has no fever, a normal heart beat, and good blood pressure. "We were never so excited to see urine, as we were yesterday," says Dr. Samhar Al-Akash, a Pediatric Nephrologist.

Doctors discovered Michael had Spina Bifida while he was still in his mother's womb. His mother, Maria Garcia, told three news her son had suffered from liver failure, and needed the transplant to live. Her older son, Edward, was a match, so the brothers undwent surgery on Valentine's Day. Edward was at Doctor's Regional; Michael, at Driscoll. Maria says the surgeries were nerve wracking. She says, "It did go through my mind a lot like what if something goes wrong. Anything can happen, but I have a lot of faith in the doctors, but still the thought was there."

Michael's recovery will be a long one. Mrs. Garcia says for the next month he'll have to go to the doctor three times a week, and there will be plenty of medication to take to ensure his body won't reject the kidney.

But, doctors say so far so good. Dr Allen says, " It takes a team to do something like this, talented surgeons, specialized medical staff, nurses, finance, administrators, all working together."
