In conjunction with Diabetes Alert Day, the Nueces County Commissioners and the Al Amin Shriners invite the public to attend a Diabetes and Wellness Fair at the Al Amin Center, 2001 Suntide Road, March 25, from 9:00 am to Noon. This is the perfect time to learn about the seriousness of diabetes.

The event will feature Health Screening by CHRISTUS Spohn Wellness Services at no cost to the public. The screening will include weight and body fat, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks. Jane Bell, Director with the American Diabetes Association of the Coastal Bend Chapter, will present information on diabetes, which affects 18.2 million people in the U.S. with an estimated annual cost of 132 billion dollars in 2002. In addition, a “Cooking Healthy” demonstration will be conducted by, Rusty Hohlt, Texas AgriLife Extension Service. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will also have an exhibit on basic nutrition called Better Living for Texans.

Partners for the event are Nueces County Commissioners, Nueces County Hospital District, Al Amin Shriners, American Diabetes Association, and Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Come out and take your health-screening test, learn about diabetes and foot care and learn to cook healthy. A healthy lunch will be served. There will be free door prizes.
