After the weekend raid of a gaming operation near Calallen, the District Attorney has his sights set on yet another game room. This one operating much the same way, but without awarding money.
Instead, winners walk away with special debit cards that are good at area retail stores. Is it legal? Well, the attorney general's office has been asked to decide.
The request for an opinion made by the Bexar county district attorney sparked by the operation of the "Ace Gaming Amusement Center."
Which is of particular interest to district attorney Carlos Valdez since "Ace" also operates a gaming room in Corpus Christi.
"They're saying that this is not cash or the equivalent of cash that there is another attorney generals opinion dealing with something else that said a debit card like this is not cash, said Valdez.
"its got to be gambling," the DA contends. "People don't just put money into machines without getting anything they want to put in money in exchange for getting something back with the hope of getting something back and that is what makes 8 liners illegal,"
We visited the "Ace" gaming amusement center" out on Ayers today.
Paying 20 dollars to start off a gambling account, getting a debit card and after some play on the machines, .we accumulated 64-dollars on the card. Credits that could then be used at any number of retail outlets. But could we get money from it?
Our first stop was at an ATM machine...which accepts plus and pulse debit cards. This card however showed a zero balance.
Our next stop was at a local retail store. We selected a couple of flash drives both on clearance for 9 dollars and 88 cents, a couple of bottles of water and a pack of gum.
At check out, we were asked if we'd like cash back. But again the transaction was denied, allowing us only to make the purchase.
But that all changed when we returned the products. Again we were given the option: debit card credit or cash. We chose the money. Which will the attorney general chose? a decision could come on Thursday.
