Hollywood has the Academy Awards. Independent filmmakers have Sundance.
And Thursday, local movie makers took their turn in the spotlight - the first day of screenings for the Corpus Christi 7 Day Film Project.

The makers of the 4 to 8 minute shorts fit into two categories: amateur and professionials.
Thursday - was all for the amateurs.

More than 100 people turned out to the House of Rock nightclub. Some were directors, others were actors, and even plain old film fans turned out to see what local teams could put together in just 7 days time.

15 amateur films were screened Thursday. Including from some who had never made movies before.

A jury awarded cash prizes to the two top-rated movies, and more cash went to the film picked "audience favorite." There were also awards for best actor and actress, best use of the line, "well I guess this changes everything," (a requirement for all the films), scariest line, and more.

The goal was to inspire, and reward local filmmakers for their efforts, and to encourage civic leaders to help make even more films here, perhaps by creating a Corpus Christi Film Commission.

Friday, will feature 13 films made by local "professionals".
The public screenings begin at 7pm at the House of Rock. Admission is $3.

Natural Gas

Should the city of Corpus Christi privatize its natural gas system or keep it under city ownership?

  • Yes. Sell it and let private business run it.
  • No. Keep it as a city department.
  • I don't know.
