A man and woman inside a green Dodge Intrepid drove through a Border Patrol checkpoint at Sarita and continue down Highway 77. Minutes later, a State Trooper gives chase. Speeds reach 110 miles per hour when the green car begins to slow. It ran out of gas in Robstown. Both suspects gave up. Our cameras were on the scene as they sat in handcuffs inside a patrol car. Neither had anything to say about their adventure on the highway, but this may speak volumes about why they didn't want to stop for officers. Officers opened the trunk of their car and inside was an estimated 200 pounds of marijuana. Investigators are trying to determine where the two picked up the load. Among the many charges they face are for the marijuana and for evading arrest. On a related note, a Nueces County Sheriff's car caught fire as the Deputy tried to lay down spike strips to try and put a stop to the chase. The exhaust pipes on that Deputy's car were apparently hot enough to ignite the grass. The Deputy wasn't hurt but his car may not see action again for some time.
