118 Pounds of Marijuana Seized During Traffic Stop Near Ben Bolt

The Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department made a major bust Sunday night when they found three backpacks containing 118 pounds of marijuana while pulling over a vehicle just south of Ben Bolt.

The traffic stop was initiated at around 10:30 p.m. when an officer noticed that the sport utility vehicle had a broken headlight. The driver did not pull over and there was a short pursuit. Eventually, the SUV stopped and several people bailed into the brush.

The Sheriff's Department said that in July and August alone, they have seized over 500 pounds of marijuana. Officers say smugglers force illegal immigrants to carry the backpacks filled with drugs.

Police say the street value of the marijuana found Sunday night is about $60,000.
